One of THE most essential beauty steps that the over-40 woman simply cannot miss is wearing mascara. With just a few waves of the wand, you can look ‘wide awake and alert’ in an instant.

New Age Mascara

If you are still using your favourite brand from 25 years ago, it’s time for a change. Mascara is no longer a little tube of black liquid with a basic brush – it’s a technologically advanced beauty product that can lengthen, lift, curl, add volume or literally grow your lashes with just a few sweeps.

And a one-size-fits-all basic brush? Mais non. Today’s wands resemble space-age tools that are designed for your specific needs. Curled, separation, lengthening or fullness – there’s a wand to suit every lash type.

How to Choose the Right Mascara

With so many brands and products on the market, how do you choose the right one? These simple tricks will take the guesswork out of choosing a mascara to suits your needs:

1.  Firstly consider what you want your mascara to do. Are you eyelashes straight and need a lift? Do you like the look of curled lashes? Do you have thin lashes and need volume? Or are your lashes short and need lengthening. Once you understand the look you want to create, choosing the right mascara will be easier.

2.  The style of brush generally determines the look of the mascara:

If your lashes are on the thinner, shorter side, a mascara brush shaped like a comb will help grab and coat every single lash with minimal clumping.

Tapered wands are great to plumpen and separate lashes due to the volume at the base and thinning out towards the tip. It’s also particularly good for getting in the corner of eye and also along the lower lash line.

To add lift and curl to lashes, choose a curved wand.

Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara, $56, David Jones

To add volume and fullness choose a brush that is large and fat.

If you need to lengthen lashes, opt for a thicker brush with a tapered tip.

3. Tips and Tricks

  • For best results, apply two or three coats
  • If your lashes are sparse, consider using a lash primer to promote lash growth
  • Try a lash lift which can last up to 12 weeks and alleviates the need to apply mascara everyday.  Caution – may not be good for those with sensitive eyes.

Want to add a radiant and youthful glow to your face in just seconds AND without the need for complicated highlighting products?

Peachy-pink blush.  Guaranteed to brighten and revitalise your complexion in one quick sweep.

If you’re feeling tired and you’re skin is looking a little dull, add a pop of peachy-pink to your cheeks for an instant glow.

Though there are many great products and shades, a peachy-pink blush suits women of all ages and skin types. A few sweeps by day will provide a soft, sun-kissed glow or for evening blend and build for sultry radiance. Even on those ‘no-makeup’ days a sweep of peachy-pink blush will give you a lovely glow.

BEAUTY TIP: Never skip blush – even if you prefer a minimal makeup look. Blush will wake up your entire face and add fresh and youthful glow. Without it your face can look tired and washed out.

I absolutely can’t live without Nars Orgasm blush a peachy-pink with a subtle shimmer. Years later I’m still wearing it night and day and never tire of it’s flattering glow. (So beloved is this cult-classic shade that a collection has been built around it which includes lip gloss, illuminator and nail polish).

If, like me, you want fuss-free and glowing beauty in seconds, meet your new beauty BFF.

TIPS FOR APPLYING BLUSH

As we age we lose layers of superficial fat just beneath the surface of skin. Apply blush along the tops of the cheekbones instead of just on the apples of your cheeks.

Spring Carnival is underway and if you’re heading to the track or attending a race day event, you need a fool-proof beauty routine to last the long (oft steamy) day.

For the over-40 woman you’re best approach is an elegant and polished makeup look in a soft and dewy finish.

When choosing your makeup look, these beauty tips will help you to look your radiant best on race day:

Don’t Overdo Do It
The most important makeup rule of the day is to avoid heavy makeup looks which are ageing in the harsh light at trackside events.

Prep is Important
Prep your skin, hair and body a few days before the races. Exfoliate face and body, apply a hair treatment and lots of water and good nutrition will ensure you’re radiant on Cup day. Don’t forget to focus on the décolletage if you’re showing off your assets.

Polished Perfection
Elegant, polished makeup styles in a dewy finish is the #ageless approach. Avoid elaborate hairstyles that overtake your outfit –  a chic and elegant style is best.

Prime
A primer will smooth out the complexion and even the surface making foundation easier to apply and last longer.

Estee Lauder
The Smoother – Universal Perfecting Primer, $50

Base – Foundation and Concealer
A lightweight and buildable illuminating tinted moisturiser will deliver a youthful, radiant finish. Don’t forget the sunscreen if foundation has no SPF.

Concealer is vital for evening skin tone and waking up tired eyes.

Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF20, $65

Makeup
Global beauty expert Bobbi Brown recommends that women over 40 look best in soft, fresh hues like berry, rose, pink and apricot, which help define features and add vibrancy.

For eyes, choose a quality matte finish and avoid too much shimmer which is ageing.

A peach/pink blush will add radiance and glow.

Avoid Too Dark or Heavy Eyeliner
Trackside daylight is harsh and unforgiving. For a softer look, instead of eyeliner apply a brown eye shadow with a angled eye brush. Blend well.

Lipstick

Dark colours such as brown, copper, burgundy and metallics are ageing.  Choose a moisturising cream-based lipstick in soft peach or pink hues. Applying a lip pencil all over the lips will help lipstick last all day. Important! Touch up during the day – the no lipstick look is #ageing!

Charlotte Tilbury ‘Pillow Talk’ lipstick, $49

Brows and Lashes
Not only do well groomed brows have the power to make a woman look years younger, they add a polished look to makeup.

Curling your lashes will give the effect of wide-awake eyes.

Bronzer

Finish off with a sweep of bronzing powder for a healthy #ageless glow.

Model Co Instant Tan Self-Tan Lotion, $16

Hands and Feet
Well groomed hands and feet are essential, especially with open-toe sandals. Play with bright colour to match outfit or alternately nude tones are always chic and elegant.

Spritz
If you have the room in your handbag, carry a small travel spray bottle of face or hydrating mist such as rose water to revitalise your makeup during the day.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater $9.00, Mecca

Body

Glowing and radiant skin is #ageless. On the morning of the races, apply a bronzer all over body, or for bronzing aficionados a light to medium spray tan is a race-day beauty ritual.

Soaking in a bath of Epsom salts a few days before will detoxify, revitalise and hydrate your body – and help you to de-stress.

There is nothing better than a sun-kissed glow to build your confidence and make you feel beautiful especially in spring/summer when we bare a little more skin.

If you have a busy schedule and don’t like the idea of booking into a tanning salon, within under an hour you can get a golden glow just like Jen’s from a quick and easy self-tanning product.

You may already have your favourite self-tanner – but if you’re looking for a super-quick and easy self tanner, one of my absolute favs is Model Co’s Instant Tan Self-Tan Lotion which gives a sun-kissed glow in a flash.  Formulated with antioxidant-rich ingredients like argan oil, aloe vera, and coconut oil that hydrates and nourishes the skin, this self-tanner is non-greasy and glides on evenly and doesn’t streak. It does have a coconut scent, not too overpowering, and is suitable for all skin types in Medium or Dark.

When I’m in a super-hurry, I’ll just apply it to arms, décolletage and legs. I have used without exfoliating and it has been fine, however I wouldn’t recommend this too often as it doesn’t apply as well.  I don’t use it on my face but opt for a bronzing powder instead.

If you’re a self-tanning novice, sprays can be hard to manage so start with a lotion or gel formula that is easier to apply.

To get the smoothest, most streak-free result, always prepare the skin before application, as follows:

Night Before:

  • Shave or wax (if hair removal required)
  • Exfoliate all over your body including feet, ankles and elbows, with a gentle, non-irritating scrub and a soft mitt or loofah if preferred
  • Moisturise

Morning:

  • Moisturise again after shower
  • Disposable gloves – many self-tanning experts advise that disposable gloves provide easier and better coverage, however it’s personal choice
  • Start from the bottom and work your way up.  Don’t stop and be sure to blend evenly over skin.
  • Best to wear loose clothing after application
