With summer well and truly behind us, it’s time to transition our makeup look from sun-kissed to a more classic, defined style.

In the cooler months, rich shades of rose, burgundy and plum suit all eye colours and skin tones and can be worn on eyes, lips and nails.

(Burgundy is also one of the hottest fashion trends).

These beauty tips will help you to wear this gorgeous colour for day and night:

Choosing the Right Shade:

  • Though burgandy/plum shades are universally flattering, consider not only the shade, but also the finish. Satin and cream lipsticks have lots of moisturizing properties which are perfect for mature lips. Matt finishes make a bold evening statement.
  • Burgundies with pink undertones look best on fairer skinned people. Additionally, pink-based burgundy lipsticks flatter light-haired and light-eyed beauties, as they make the color of the eyes instantly pop.
  • A blue-based burgundy, isn’t too light or too dark, so it can be worn by women with light or dark eye colors
  • True burgundy and maroon-based wine lipsticks are the best for medium skin tones. Avoid brown-based tones.
  • Brown and red undertones of burgundy lipsticks look best on darker skin, and on those with dark eyes and dark hair.

Lip Tips:

  • When wearing darker lipstick always exfoliate and moisturise your lips. Darker lipstick will highlight if your lips are dry or chapped.
  • Eliminate any redness on your skin before swiping on a burgundy shade as a red or wine-colored tint on your lips will immediately call more attention to the redness on your skin. Reduce any redness with concealer before applying your favorite deep red lip color.
  • Liner is essential to ensure lipstick doesn’t bleed

  • When wearing burgundy lips by day, keep rest of makeup understated and minimal.  Perfectly groomed eyebrows, mascara and a subtle pink blush on cheeks is all you need.
  • To wear burgundy lipstick to the office, stick to the sheerest finish, like a stain, a lip balm or a gloss. A sheer balm is best for ageing or thin lips.

Burgundy Eyes:

  • By day, keep plum tones subtle by simply adding a sweep of colour to eyes
  • By night, go for drama with smokey eyes or metallic shades of copper or gold eye makeup
  • For evening, use a tonal burgundy colour on lips

Burgundy, wine, oxblood and plum colours suit all nail lengths and make a dramatic statement.

Final tip – though dark lips look fabulous on 20-somethings like Rihanna, all over 40 women should resist the temptation at all costs!

Did you know that removing eye makeup can promote wrinkles?

We spend so much of our hard-earned money on what we are putting on our skin but often neglect the importance of taking it off properly.

Removing eye makeup in the most gentle way possible is vital to avoid damage to the thinnest layer of skin on our entire body – around the eyes. Removing eye makeup too harshly or with incorrect products can cause irritation and worst of all promote wrinkles.

The most gentle way to remove eye makeup is to soak an organic cotton round with remover, leave on eye for a few seconds (or as long as can) and swipe gently from inner to outer corner.  For stubborn mascara and liner around the eyes, soak a Q-tip with remover and dab or wipe gently around the eye.

When it comes to choosing the best remover for you, consider:

  • are you prone to sensitivity in and around the eyes
  • does it remove makeup in one go – you don’t want to rub or pull the skin too much
  • is it right for your skin type
  • doesn’t clog pores or leave an oily residue
  • do you need a product that will remove the toughest waterproof mascara

With so many formulas to choose from including creams, micellar waters, cleansing waters and makeup-removing wipes you can find the best product for your lifestyle and budget.  Organic and chemical free options are becoming popular and many are infused with ingredients such as cornflower water, aloe vera and cucumber to brighten and restore moisture; soothing chamomile and marshmallow root extracts to reduce acengenic bacteria, and almond kernals to redness and inflammation and nourishing oak kernel extract to reduce fine lines.

As equally important to the product is using quality cotton rounds or balls and many ranges are now organic and bleach free.

A little research will go a long way in ensuring you find a gentle but effective remover that doesn’t add lines to your face – leave that to Mother Nature.

As we transition our wardrobe from summer to autumn, it’s important to changeover our beauty routine as well.

(Need help with dressing for in-between days? Don’t miss my style tips on mastering transeasonal dressing here).

For hydrated and radiant beauty during the winter months, take the necessary steps to guard against winter’s big dry – and make changes to your makeup bag as well.

SKIN

Products that may have worked in summer may cause dehydration in cooler weather. Swap your daily skin essentials with more hydrating and nourishing formulas and include serums, night creams and masks for a super boost of hydration.

Eve Lom Cleanser $33, Mecca; Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion,$49, David Jones; Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream $185; Tatcha ‘The Essence’ serum $138, Mecca.

Vitamin C

Touted as the secret to youthful skin, beauty’s superpower, Vitamin C, is a winter beauty must. With benefits including brightening skin, balancing out uneven skin tone, and supporting collagen, add this to your beauty cabinet now.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

Exfoliation is vital in cold months when skin is exposed to harsh conditions outside and hot, dry air inside. Regular exfoliation is vital to maintain smooth skin and slough build up of dead skin cells which causes flaky skin.

If you don’t have regular facials, now is the time to start to ensure skin is prepped and healthy for the cold months.

MAKEUP

The change of season is the perfect time to refresh your makeup bag with a few simple tricks.

Though I don’t recommend discarding ageless beauty essentials as bronzer and pink/peach blush, add radiance to makeup by swapping sombre winter hues for bright pinks and subtly shimmering metallics.

Cooper Hues
Metallics hues are not just for summer, pair cosy Autumn looks with shades of shimmering beauty.

Smokey Eyes
Smokey eyes are never out of season.  Try a sexy, smokey look for evening affairs.

All devotees of the fake tan, look away now (or perhaps forward this link on to your girlfriends).

You already know about the benefits of a great spray tan, but for those of you that have not yet discovered this instant confidence booster, please read on.

Did you know that a fan take can make you look slimmer, disguise blemishes and even out skin tone? Hurrah! Lumps and bumps disguised with just a few sweeps of glorious golden glow!

A spray tan is the first thing I book when I’m going on summer holidays or an important event. When when of my clients needs an instant confidence boost, I book them for an appointment with my favourite tanner pronto!

One of the most common reasons why many over-40 women don’t partake in a spray tan is that they feel embarrassed and self-conscious about standing in front of a stranger (usually a young 20-something) stripped down to their undies. They feel they are being judged. To that I very kindly reply “get over it”!

I asked my favourite tanning professional about what it was like to see so many women near-naked to which she replied “I don’t really think about it that way, I focus more on the quality of service I’m providing”.

There is also a misconception that a spray tan will leave you with a Donald-Trump-shade-of-orange. This is simply not the case. Tanning products and formulas are much more improved and provide a natural-looking golden glow. Furthermore, most tanning professionals are experts at choosing the right shade to match your skin type.

If you’re still unconvinced, here are five more benefits of a spray-tan:

1. No Sun Exposure

A spray tanning provides a lovely golden glow without putting your health in danger.

2. It’s Instant

No need to spend hours in the sun (which is a health risk) or in your bathroom to obtain a sun-kissed glow – a spray tan takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

3. Streak-Free and Even Coverage

An experienced and reputable spray tan professional will provide a streak-free and even tan that will provide a bronzed, natural looking tan.

4. Choose Your Shade

With off-the-shelf tanning products it can be difficult to find the right shade. You have to buy and then try and if you buy the wrong shade you can spend hours scrubbing it off. A qualified tanning expert will be familiar with their products and tailor the shade to suit you.

5. Boost Your Confidence

A spray tan is an instant confidence booster. A tan has the power to make you feel slimmer and more confident about your their body. How fabulous is that!
