One of THE most essential beauty steps that the over-40 woman simply cannot miss is wearing mascara. With just a few waves of the wand, you can look ‘wide awake and alert’ in an instant.

New Age Mascara

If you are still using your favourite brand from 25 years ago, it’s time for a change. Mascara is no longer a little tube of black liquid with a basic brush – it’s a technologically advanced beauty product that can lengthen, lift, curl, add volume or literally grow your lashes with just a few sweeps.

And a one-size-fits-all basic brush? Mais non. Today’s wands resemble space-age tools that are designed for your specific needs. Curled, separation, lengthening or fullness – there’s a wand to suit every lash type.

How to Choose the Right Mascara

With so many brands and products on the market, how do you choose the right one? These simple tricks will take the guesswork out of choosing a mascara to suits your needs:

1.  Firstly consider what you want your mascara to do. Are you eyelashes straight and need a lift? Do you like the look of curled lashes? Do you have thin lashes and need volume? Or are your lashes short and need lengthening. Once you understand the look you want to create, choosing the right mascara will be easier.

2.  The style of brush generally determines the look of the mascara:

If your lashes are on the thinner, shorter side, a mascara brush shaped like a comb will help grab and coat every single lash with minimal clumping.

Tapered wands are great to plumpen and separate lashes due to the volume at the base and thinning out towards the tip. It’s also particularly good for getting in the corner of eye and also along the lower lash line.

To add lift and curl to lashes, choose a curved wand.

Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara, $56, David Jones

To add volume and fullness choose a brush that is large and fat.

If you need to lengthen lashes, opt for a thicker brush with a tapered tip.

3. Tips and Tricks

  • For best results, apply two or three coats
  • If your lashes are sparse, consider using a lash primer to promote lash growth
  • Try a lash lift which can last up to 12 weeks and alleviates the need to apply mascara everyday.  Caution – may not be good for those with sensitive eyes.

Want to add a radiant and youthful glow to your face in just seconds AND without the need for complicated highlighting products?

Peachy-pink blush.  Guaranteed to brighten and revitalise your complexion in one quick sweep.

If you’re feeling tired and you’re skin is looking a little dull, add a pop of peachy-pink to your cheeks for an instant glow.

Though there are many great products and shades, a peachy-pink blush suits women of all ages and skin types. A few sweeps by day will provide a soft, sun-kissed glow or for evening blend and build for sultry radiance. Even on those ‘no-makeup’ days a sweep of peachy-pink blush will give you a lovely glow.

BEAUTY TIP: Never skip blush – even if you prefer a minimal makeup look. Blush will wake up your entire face and add fresh and youthful glow. Without it your face can look tired and washed out.

I absolutely can’t live without Nars Orgasm blush a peachy-pink with a subtle shimmer. Years later I’m still wearing it night and day and never tire of it’s flattering glow. (So beloved is this cult-classic shade that a collection has been built around it which includes lip gloss, illuminator and nail polish).

If, like me, you want fuss-free and glowing beauty in seconds, meet your new beauty BFF.

As we age we lose layers of superficial fat just beneath the surface of skin. Apply blush along the tops of the cheekbones instead of just on the apples of your cheeks.

Spring is finally here and it’s not just your wardrobe that makes a seasonal change but also your beauty routine.

For an instant beauty lift, swap winter’s muted tones for a pop of colour. A quick and easy way to add colour is to change your lip colour.

Get in on the Spring beauty trend and focus on a pretty pink lip.

Pink lipstick is anti-aging and flatters all skin tones. The right shade will brighten a dull complexion, make your lips appear fuller and give your face a lovely and healthy glow.

Pinks range from rose, berry, coral, dusty pink and fuschia and the trick is to choose the right shade for your skin tone and colouring.  A few tips to consider when buying your pink lipstick:

  • Finding a happy balance is key – a too dark pink will dull your face and a too light lipstick will make you look pale and washed out
  • Creamy, moisturing lipsticks are best for mature skins as too-dry or too-matte formulas will emphasise creases and look dull
  • A formula that has a velvety texture with a hint of sheen is sure to provide a youthful glow
  • Get professional help BUT try before you buy – step outside in natural light to ensure the colour is right for you

After the age of 40, complexion becomes a bit duller and paler.

But the good news is that you can have a radiant and youthful glow in a matter of seconds with just a sweep of blush.

Not wearing blush is ageing. Even for those who prefer a minimal makeup look, blush is vital to lift and brighten the face.

Women often tell me they skip blush – but please don’t. Wearing blush balances your features and adds a warm and youthful glow. You can look so much more beautiful with just a quick sweep applied to the apple of cheeks.

Though there are many beautiful shades on the market, the one colour that suits women of all skin tones and ages is a peach/pink tone. I have eliminated all others colours from by beauty drawer and wear this shade day and night all year round.

My absolute favourite is the Nars cult shade ‘Orgasm‘. This beauty cult classic instantly provides a youthful and flattering glow. I have tried other brands, both inexpensive and luxury, and none match Nars for colour and staying-power.

Never Skip Blush

Even if you prefer a minimal makeup routine, skipping blush washes you out and adds years to your face. A sweep of blush will lighten your face and add a warm, healthy glow.

When applying blush consider the shape of your face for best position. As a general rule square or heart-shaped faces should concentrate colour on the apples of cheeks. For longer or oval shapes, swipe blush along the tops of cheekbones. A round face should focus the blush on the side of cheeks rather than right on the apples. AND don’t forget to smile – smiling helps you find the apple of your cheeks.

Too Low
A common mistake is to apply blush too low on the cheeks. Start at the height of the apple of your cheek and blend it up and back to define and lift your features.

Too Dark/Too Light
Nothing will age you quicker than wearing a too-dark blush – or conversely too-light. Warm shades with a touch of luminance provide a youthful glow.

Cream Blush for Women Over 40
As we age skin produces less oil and prone to dryness therefore many beauty experts recommend using a cream blush. Start with minimal amount, blend and build on colour as required. For stick creams, apply two or three dabs along the length of the cheeks and blend with fingers. For pot rouges, dip a rounded sponge into beauty pot, apply to the apples of cheeks and then blend upwards along cheek bones.

Add Powder
If you have oily skin, apply translucent powder to cheeks before applying blush so colour will last longer.

The Right Tools
Some beauty experts recommend using an angled brush to help lift colour upwards, however a rounded brush is the tried and true fav for easy blending and building.

The Next Step
If you’re confident with makeup, set blush with a sweep of bronzer and highlighter for further glow and definition. Apply bronzer using the ‘number 3’ method to both sides of face, then set with highlighter along the top of the cheeks and blush.

Fashion lore says that at a Chanel fashion show in 1994 a makeup artist painted models nails with a black marker. The look was so successful it was replicated in a nail polish and voila Chanel’s iconic black-red nail polish ‘Rouge Noir’ was born. It remains today as one of Chanel’s most popular colours.

Black nail polish has become de rigueur not just for the runway and red carpet but as a fashionable and modern option for everyday.

Pish posh to those who say black nail colour is only for the young. Join the ranks of ageless over-40 celebrities who know that a great black manicure is modern and timeless.

The best way to wear black nails is with classic and timeless silhouettes (as opposed to ‘biker chick’).

Here are some tips to help choose and apply black nail polish:

  • Choose a shade that suits your skin tone. Shades range from a true black to charcoal and grey.
  • Finishes range from glossy, satin and matte. By day opt for matte or satin finish, by night go glam and glossy.
  • Well manicured nails are vital when wearing dark nail polish.
  • Ensure to apply a base coat for better application and avoid staining.
  • Dark polish is heavily pigmented so apply thin layers.
  • Allow plenty of time between coats.
  • Before applying swipe brush against sides of polish to remove excess polish.
  • Start in the middle and work to the sides.
  • Clean any spills or over-strokes with a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover or a polish corrector pen.
  • Always finish with a top coat.
  • Chipped nails are a no-no – especially for dark nail polish.  Remove immediately when chipping occurs.
