Burgundy is not just one of winter’s biggest fashion’s trend but also the stand-out hue for winter makeup.

Warm, rich tones of burgundy, berry and wine work so well in winter when skin is a little more neutral and less tanned.

Don’t reserve for nails – warm burgundy palettes are flattering and youthifying on eyes and lips. Op for soft and subtle by day and go for all-out glamour for evening.

Our beauty tips will help you to add this glorious colour to your winter makeup palette:

Choosing the Right Colour:

  • Though burgundy is a universally flattering hue, consider not only the shade, but also the finish. Satin and cream lipsticks have lots of moisturizing properties which are perfect for mature lips. Matt finishes make a bold evening statement.
  • Burgundies with pink undertones look best on fairer skinned people. Additionally, pink-based burgundy lipsticks flatter light-haired and light-eyed beauties, as they make the color of the eyes instantly pop.
  • A blue-based burgundy, isn’t too light or too dark, so it can be worn by women with light or dark eye colors
  • True burgundy and maroon-based wine lipsticks are the best for medium skin tones. Avoid brown-based tones.
  • Brown and red undertones of burgundy lipsticks look best on darker skin, and on those with dark eyes and dark hair.

Lip Tips:

  • When wearing darker lipstick always exfoliate and moisturise your lips. Darker lipstick will highlight if your lips are dry or chapped.
  • Eliminate any redness on your skin before swiping on a burgundy shade as a red or wine-colored tint on your lips will immediately call more attention to the redness on your skin. Reduce any redness with concealer before applying your favorite deep red lip color.
  • Liner is essential to ensure lipstick doesn’t bleed

  • When wearing burgundy lips by day, keep rest of makeup understated and minimal.  Perfectly groomed eyebrows, mascara and a subtle pink blush on cheeks is all you need.
  • To wear burgundy lipstick to the office, stick to the sheerest finish, like a stain, a lip balm or a gloss. A sheer balm is best for ageing or thin lips.

Burgundy Eyes:

  • By day, keep plum tones subtle by simply adding a sweep of colour to eyes
  • By night, go for drama with smokey eyes or metallic shades of copper or gold eye makeup
  • For evening, use a tonal burgundy colour on lips

Burgundy, wine, oxblood and plum colours suit all nail lengths and make a dramatic statement.

Final tip – though dark lips look fabulous on 20-somethings like Rihanna, all over 40 women should resist the temptation at all costs!

Were you one of the many teenagers who used Tippex/White Out as nail polish? Thankfully that beauty craze was short-lived.

White nail polish has remained a beauty mainstay for the past several years for both summer and winter. In cooler months we tend to wear darker colours and a white shade of nail polish is the perfect way to add light to dull, winter days.

White nails are the perfect pairing for all occasions – weekend to work to evening.  White looks particularly good on short nails and styles beautifully with ring stacking.

For women over 40, I recommend a few simple tips for wearing white nail polish:

  • Opt for simple nail manicures devoid of artistry
  • Always choose a good quality formula
  • Avoid dull/flat colours that look heavy on hands
  • Formulas with a hint of ivory or pink undertones are best for lighter tone skin
  • Formulas that are opaque in consistency with added shimmer or shine are most flattering
  • A flat top coat (as opposed to shiny) lends to a ‘winter white’ feel
  • As with all colours, ensure nails are filed and neat

Pair the high-shine of Autumn/Winter fashion with shimmering beauty.

Nails are the important pièce de résistance to completing winter ensembles and this season’s shimmering colours from the whole spectrum of the rainbow will add glamour and shine to winter days and nights.

If the expense and time of gel or shellac-style manicures are not for you, a good quality metallic nail polish will keep you shining this winter.

Let’s face it, there are just some beauty trends that you simply cannot do over 40.

Yes, I stand by my style motto of #ATTITUDENOTAGE, but post-40 it’s more about flattering ageless beauty rather than un-flattering and ageing beauty!  Mon díeu!!

Out of this season’s Autumn/Winter beauty trends, there are a few you must avoid at all costs:

  • gothic lips
  • ‘no colour’ lips (quelle night!)
  • rainbow coloured eyes
  • wet hair
  • crimped hair
  • braiding – I mean the ‘tight, grunge’ kind, not the loose ‘plait’ kind

But these, and others which I’ll feature in the next few weeks, you can add to your winter beauty routine with gusto:

MAKEUP

Pink Lips
Not just a summer shade, pink lips are one of winter’s coolest beauty looks.

Cooper Hues
Pair metallic fashion with shimmering beauty – but beware too much sparkle can be un-youthful.

Smokey Eyes
Sexy, smokey eyes are the beauty du jour for winter evenings.  Don’t be afraid, You Tube has loads of tutorials and remember – practice makes perfect.

HAIR

Short or Medium Length Hair
Make a statement with the season’s jewelled and gilded hair accessories.

Long Hair
Low ponytails are chic and easy style for work or play.
