If you’re a die-hard frockette like moi, then you must read “Anjelica & Jack: A Moment in Time” just published at Violet Grey,, in which Anjelica Houston tells the story about the night her and Jack (as in Nicholson) went to the Oscars.  Anjelica wore that fabulous Halston page beige sequinned ‘mermaid dress’ (which she bought herself) and back in those days without a stylist in sight, did her own hair and makeup.  It’s no wonder she is referred to as a ‘style icon’.  [Photo:  Getty Images/]

What to wear to a premier fashion magazine style awards where the who’s who of the fashion elite are out in full force? A little black dress of course.  And 40-something Kylie Minogue (in Saint Laurent) and 20-something Emma Watson (in Giambattista Valli) prove that a fabulous LBD is age-defying.

Don’t judge this beautiful book by it’s seemingly privileged cover.   Tamara Mellon is not a privileged princess riding on the coat-tails of her family’s wealth and status, but a formidable, smart and successful woman who battled alcohol and cocaine addiction, and relationship and business abuse but came out on top due to her strength of will and character and business acumen.  She is also caring mother to daughter Minty Mellon who is her main focus in life.

Tamara’s inspired and very insightful notion to turn a lone artisan, Jimmy Choo, into a luxury shoe label became a multi-million dollar global company and along the way  was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 Birthday Honors.

Tamara’s memoirs “In Her Shoes” is an addictive read that chronicles the good, the bad and the ugly in her life and sheds light on her battle with addiction, her relationships, her family and also gives insight into the rise of the Jimmy Choo company and the depths of sexism and abuse women face in business.

Tamara sold the Jimmy Choo company in 2011 for a reported sum of £525m and it is suggested made £85m.  Well done!  She launched her namesake fashion label in late 2013 which will no doubt be snapped up by style mavens around the world in years to come.

Frocknet readers will have read my quote earlier this week from Tamara (if you didn’t you should read it now) where Tamara says that women need to ‘speak up’ in business and believe that we can rise to the top.

Tamara Mellon is an inspiring woman of substance and a Frocknet style icon.  Find out more about Tamara at and her memoir ‘In My Shoes’ is out now – I suggest you go and buy a copy of this fabulous read.

Tamara’s choice of  Dolce & Gabbana to receive her OBE in 2010 is a favourite of mine and proves she is a true style icon.
