Is ‘active living’ a part of your plan for 2016?

Then you need the style to go with your new active life – in the form of activewear.

What is activewear?  It’s no longer a comfy tee and shorts relegated to the bottom drawer of your closet but a whole new section of your wardrobe in patented, high-tech and fashion-forward designs in ‘moistuire wicking, 8-way stretch stability, power-mesh, performance enhancing’ fabrics.  Did you get all that?

(It’s also a billion dollar industry with designers, brands and retailers all clamouring for a piece of the active pie.  Par example – online luxury retailer, Net-A-Porter created ‘Net-A-Sporter’ a site solely dedicated to wellness and activewear to suit a gamut of activities including gym, crossfit, run, yoga, dance, tennis, equestrian, swimming, surfing, golf, sailing and skiing).

Activewear has become a part of our daily wardrobes not just for exercise but what we wear to eat, shop, work and play in.  (Yours truly is writing this column in a luxe-to-less ensemble of pink and white).

If you have joined the global ‘active living’ movement and would like to elevate your style whilst executing a downward-dog or working up a sweat piloxing (yes I’m up with the latest fitness craze) here are some style tips to get you moving – pun intended:

  • Leave the bare midriff to the beautiful young things on Instagram.  The biggest trend in activewear may be crop-tops but at some stage in our lives they are more a ‘fashion-flashback’ than a current option.   Tanks and racer-backs are a stylish alternative.
  • Exercise causes stress on your breasts so a well-fitted sports bra or sports crop bra is vitally important with minimal bounce factor.  Avoid too-tight bras that dig in, or conversely too-loose styles that offer no support.
  • Tights with higher lycra/spandex content will provide a snug fit and ensure a more flattering silhouette.
  • High-waisted tights are more flattering and reduce that stubborn ‘muffin top’.
  • A wide, flat waistband provides extra support and comfort.
  • Designs that include paneling on tops and bottoms create the illusion of length and flatter the figure.
  • A matching top and bottom ensemble also creates the illusion of length.
  • Breathable fabrics such as mesh help to avoid unsightly sweat marks.
  • Seam free styles eliminate chaffing and irritation against the skin.

Move over It-Girls, make way for It-Women.  Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell star in Balmain’s Spring 2016 latest campaign. Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing said on choosing the supermodels “These three women are what made me love fashion yesterday, make me love fashion today, and are going to make me love fashion in the future.” Bravo to that.
