Writing my story this week on shades of black in fashion and beauty on frocknet.com reminded me of the brilliant and beautiful black and white set decor in one of my favourite movies the 2009 film Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky by Jan Kounen.

The movie, set in 1920, is based on the alleged love affair between Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky and centres largely around Chanel’s new villa Bel Respiro in the French countryside in Garches.  The black and white rooms created by set designer Marie-Helene Sulmoni are the epitome of Coco’s classic yet sensual style and Sulmonu’s use of geometric and abstract designs interwoven into the monochromatic colour scheme is a stroke of brilliance and beauty.

The story of Chanel and Stravinksy is itself intruiging but the highly stylised stage of black and white is a visual masterpiece.

As I’m totally on the Net-a-Porter theme this week, let me introduce you to my dream office – perhaps not on as large as scale as this.

Glossy, glamourous, black and white, sleek and slick.  That’s Net-a-Porter’s 44,000 square feet, 2-level London headquarters above a Westfield mall.  Here’s just a few fashionable facts about the office that some have described as having a “James Bond feel”:

  • white lacquered furniture
  • 10 metre high ceiling-to-floor windows to let the light in
  • Corridors of glass
  • TV monitors that have a Google map illustrating where in the world we are receiving orders from, in real time
  • bespoke white and crystal chandeliers
  • round, square, rectangle white leather buttoned lounges, pods and chairs – everywhere
  • racks of designer clothes
  • extremely fashionable and well dressed people – again everywhere

Just a teeny insight into the glamourous headquarters of the world’s premier online luxury retailer.  I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather work – other than Karl Lagerfeld’s private atelier.

Speaking of animal print …. it’s not just a fashion trend, but a glamourous addition to homes – if done tastefully.  Although ‘tastefully’ does not apply to billionaire English retailer Sir Phillip Green’s (Topshop, Wallis, Dorothy Perkins) leopard print boat named ‘Lion Cub’, other celebrities have stylishly included prints in leopard, zebra and cow (again not so tasteful is this print used by designer Geoffrey Beene in his Honolulu house) into their homes. Aerin Lauder’s comfy couch, Cher goes wild in her bedroom, Tamara Mellon and her giant-size rug, Khloe Kardashian uses it in her pool room and I absolutely love Roberto Cavalli’s use of Zebra print in his inside pool area.

This is what New York City’s most expensive apartment looks like from the inside.  At 12,000 square-feet, it’s currently on the market for US$120 million – that’s nearly AUS $163 million at today’s rate.   The apartment belonged to the late John Gutfreund, a former banker and chairman of the Salomon Brothers often referred to as ‘The King of Wall Street” who passed away in March this year and now the apartment at New York’s most prestigious address 834 Park Avenue is for sale.

With former neighbours including a Rockafeller, a Murdoch (Rupert used to live there but his former wife Wendi and her children still do) the 2-level apartment is directly across from Central Park Zoo, has 12.5 foot high ceilings, library walls lined with original 17th-century leather, magnificent views to the city over Central Park and a 1,600 square-feet master suite complete with a dressing and sitting room.

Although the interior is not to my personal taste, I suppose if I HAD to I could live there.  Better hurry and break open my son’s piggy bank to put a down payment on it before a gazillionaire beats me to it.

Deborah Hutton’s amazing river cruise of Burgandy and Provence is sending my French senses into overdrive (for more info go to www.balancebydeborahhutton.com.au) and I recalled reading a story a few years ago in Harper’s Bazaar about an Australian family, the Waters, who purchased Chateau de Gudanes in the small village of Chateau-Verdun in the South of France which they found on the internet. The Waters have taken on the challenge of restoring the Chateau de Gudanes to it’s former glory and you can follow their restoration journey at www.chateaugudanes.com.  If you dream of owning a chateau in France, you must visit the website and read their amazing story.  Perhaps I may pop in after my river cruise with Deb!
