Writing my story this week on shades of black in fashion and beauty on reminded me of the brilliant and beautiful black and white set decor in one of my favourite movies the 2009 film Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky by Jan Kounen.

The movie, set in 1920, is based on the alleged love affair between Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky and centres largely around Chanel’s new villa Bel Respiro in the French countryside in Garches.  The black and white rooms created by set designer Marie-Helene Sulmoni are the epitome of Coco’s classic yet sensual style and Sulmonu’s use of geometric and abstract designs interwoven into the monochromatic colour scheme is a stroke of brilliance and beauty.

The story of Chanel and Stravinksy is itself intruiging but the highly stylised stage of black and white is a visual masterpiece.
